Even if a manicurist works with a respirator during the sanding phase, he or she will receive daily
nail dust into their lungs. 56% of the dust entering the lungs comes from the surfaces of the workplace
during the procedure. The remaining 44% of the dust that ends up in the lungs comes from other
from surfaces on which dust has settled, such as acrylic dust that has settled in a coffee cup.

Kynsi-imuri on olennainen osa kynsien tekemistä niin kotikäytössä kuin ammattimaisessa työskentelyssä. Viilauksen aikana ilmaan vapautuu hienojakoista kynsipölyä, joka voi levitä työympäristöön ja laskeutua pinnoille. Pitkäaikainen altistuminen kynsipölylle voi aiheuttaa sekä välittömiä ärsytysoireita, kuten hengitysteiden ärsytystä ja yskää sekä silmien ärsytystä, että pidempiaikaisia terveyshaittoja. Kynsi-imurin tarkoituksena on vähentää kynsitekijän ja asiakkaan altistumista kynsipölylle keräämällä pölyä jo sen syntyhetkellä.

Kynsi-imuri asetetaan työpöydälle siten, että kynsityö tehdään suoraan imurin yläpuolella. Kädet tulee asettaa sellaiseen asentoon, että viilauksessa syntyvä kynsipöly pääsee kulkeutumaan imurin imualueelle esteettä. Suodattimella varustetuissa kynsi-imureissa suodatin kerää kynsipölyn itseensä. Jokaisen asiakkaan välissä suodattimesta tulee poistaa ylimääräinen irtopöly laitteen valmistajan ohjeiden mukaisesti. Suodatin tulee vaihtaa kokonaan uuteen valmistajan suosittelemin väliajoin, esimerkiksi kolmen kuukauden välein, jos laitteen käyttöohjeessa näin ohjeistetaan.
